Academy of Sciences reflection, pix from Michael Tamin

One of my most memorable experiences of interim was the rainforest dome located in the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Once we entered, the temperature and humidity instantly rose drastically, making the ordeal slightly uncomfortable (but still bearable) while making the environment seem more authentic. Inside, we were able to view a plethora of tropical species we would not have been able to see in our native climate. Species housed there included tropical birds, plants, and even insects, such as the multitude of free-roaming butterflies. Once we reached the top via a spiraling walkway that hugged the sides of the dome, we descended down the elevator where we were able to view the fish and aquatic plants that resided in the exhibit’s body of water. The remainder of the Academy was equally interesting, but the rainforest exhibit has got to be the most creative and unusual display for any science museums I’ve visited.
